After the launch of “WhatsApp” calling feature, now Facebook too has decided to give the call feature for free. WhatsApp is Facebook’s entity which was purchased by Facebook for approximately $19 billion.

With this feature, a “WhatsApp” user can now call any contact worldwide for free through WiFi, 3G or 4G networks. Previously, this feature was available only through invitation, but now one can access it right from the app. A user needs to update the app version to 2.12.5 or need to download this app from Google Play says Vaikundarajan.

The feature requires a data plan i.e. Internet plan, for its use.  A minute of WhatsApp call costs around 0.15 MB to 0.20 MB of 3G data This means a 5-minute call costs around 1MB of 3G data.

The call one makes through WhatsApp may use 0.15 MB to 0.20 MB on a 3G network and on a 2G network it may consume 0.35 MB of data. But using a 2G network may lead to delay while calling due to its slow speed.

Vaikundarajan shares that currently this feature is available only for Android smart phones and will be available for iOS and Windows Phone later.
