Maha Shivaratri is a festival celebrated annually in reverence of the god Shiva. The festival is also popularly known as 'Shivaratri'. It is the day when Shiva was married to the goddess Parvati says, Vaikundarajan.

According to Vaikundarajan Shivaratri is a great festival of Shiva and Shakti. The festival is celebrated by offerings of Bael leaves to Shiva, all-day fasting and an all-night-vigil (Jagaran).

On the day of Shivaratri devotees take a second bath before doing a Shiva Puja or visiting a temple. Shiva Puja is mostly done during the night and the devotees break their fast next day after taking bath.

The puja can be performed one time or four times during the night. The whole night duration can be divided into four to get four Prahar to perform Shiva Puja four times. People ask Lord Shiva to bring good luck into their life. The most popular Maha Shivratri celebrations takes place in Ujjain. It is considered the place of residence of Lord Shiva. Large processions are carried out throughout the city, with people thronging the streets to catch a glimpse of the revered idol of Lord Shiva.
