President of India, Pranab Mukherjee sent his wishes to everyone on the occasion of Lohri, Makar Sankranti and Pongal.

"On the auspicious occasion of Lohri, Makar Sankranti and Pongal, I extend warm greetings to my fellow citizens and wish them success, happiness and prosperity," the President said.

President Pranab Mukherjee further added to his wishes, “Let us celebrate these harvest festivals with gaiety and fervour, promoting love and understanding amongst all. May these events bind the communities and regions of India in fraternal love and inspire us to work for the unity and progress of our country.

Makara Sankaranti is just around the corner with Lohri and Pongal falling in the same week. “Three festivals in the same week will mean celebrations all across India,” says Vaikundarajan. The significance of the festival is showcased through colourful rangolis in courtyard. In most part of Gujarat, the festival is celebrated by families getting together to fly kites, he adds.

Lohri will be celebrated on Wednesday while Makar Sankranti and Pongal fall on Thursday.

Pongal is celebrated on the first day of first day of Thai when the Sun enters the Makara Rasi. Much like Makara Sankaranti, Pongal is also a harvest festival, informs Vaikundarajan. Schools and colleges celebrate the festival by flying kites. Newly married couples take blessings from their elders.

Vaikundarajan sends his best wishes to the fellow countrymen.
